Intellectually disabled students can be either educable, trainable or those requiring intensive and complete support. Teachers have an assessment test to find intelligence level of students and they are grouped into classes on the basis of their chronological age - Pre-primary, primary, secondary and pre-vocational. On the basis of the capabilities of students, they are taught. They are taught from identifying colours, dressing up themselves, interacting with people to carrying out their day-to-day basic activities. Moreover, they are taught to memorize their names and addresses. These may take a few months to a few years. Their training and treatment involve various therapies like play therapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy and behaviour therapy.
The students above 18 are trained here. They are trained in tailoring and are also taught to make glass paintings, flower pots etc. This is done with an aim to mould their inherent vocational skills to ensure them a job and a way of income in life as in the case of their normal counterparts. Students who complete vocational training are often sent to supermarkets and other offices to work.
A job unit, ‘Karunyatheeram Gramam’ was inaugurated in 2014 as a part of Karunyatheeram campus for empowering the students giving them an opportunity to work with people residing in nearby areas.
