Disability can be of various forms: physical, sensory, mental, cognitive or intellectual and the degree of support differently able people require may vary depending upon the severity of the situation. Emotional trauma, psychological concerns, physical, social and financial pressures are only the tip of the iceberg with regards to the multitude of situations that may arise in the context of raising such children. It is highly possible that with the right support, timely help and intervention, the child may be raised to have a confident personality and to act independently.
Health Care Foundation is a non-profitable organization that carries out remarkable involvement in various realms of the society. Since its formation in 2010, the organization has conducted several programs like health awareness programs, blood donation camps, national integration programs aiming the youth, educational empowerment and encouragement programs, counselling sessions, disaster management training camps, medical equipment distribution sessions etc.
The organization functions with the aim of upliftment and social and economic empowerment of those who needs special consideration and who are facing mental challenges without following any previous models, deploying innovative methodologies. The organization registered under the society’s act is affiliated to Indian council for social welfare, Nehru Yuva Kendra and State Youth Welfare Board.
The organization propels with the undying support and collective operation of humanitarians in and around the country.
Care village is a special project undertaken by Health care Foundation for the expansion plans of Karunyatheeram campus. The care village is envisaged to function in 5 acres of land for the continued training, employment opportunity and arranging related progress to the children who completes 11 years in the campus. A suitable portion of land is acquired near the Karunyatheeram campus for the same.
Care village houses treatment center, lifelong rehabilitation, vocational training and employment center, and Arts center to encourage the talents of differently abled. The ultimate aim of care village is to provide life long shelter and care for this particular section of the society who faces challenges of different kind.
‘Nirakkoottu’, an exhibition of glass paintings of these students was conducted from 10th to 14th of February, 2015 at the Kerala Lalithakala Academy Art gallery, Kozhikode. There were around 200 paintings that decorated every inch of the complete ground floor of the art gallery. The exhibition, jointly organized by the Healthcare Foundation and Bodhi Info solutions, was inaugurated by social worker Shabna Ponnadu, who is a differently abled person herself. The contents of their paintings were mostly roses and other flowers drawn on transparent sheets using glass paintings and mounted on either aluminum foil or a black velvet base.
Students of Karunyatheeram won the district level overall Paralympics championship in 2011.
Mr. Ajmal, an alumnus of Karunyatheeram is now a permanent staff of Healthcare Foundation main office. Two old students are now the staffs of Karunyatheeram campus.
The students are taken for an outing every three months and they have an academic tour every year.
‘Valsalya Sparsham’, the annual day celebrations of Karunyatheeram, is conducted every year since 2011. Cultural activities of students showcase the talents of students and the efforts and unfailing determination of their teachers. Valsalya Sparsham is attended by famous artists who perform with the students to support them. Celebrations bring joy and strengthen the feeling that these works are neither hopeless nor worthless.
Walking through the corridors of this beautiful place, we see creativity all along – glass paintings created by the special people here. Glass paintings on the walls are those ones remaining after their exhibition in an art gallery. They had made almost 250 ones and most of them were sold. Apart from glass painting, many love and do tailoring, thread and other art works etc..... Most of them love dance, music, sports and all sort of things they know about. When many of the children came here, they did not even know the basic things. Everything was started from the nucleus. Many had to be taught to even do their basic day to day activities. 5 years of training from 8 special trainers has taught them to eat and dress up themselves, do art works, be creative in their way. Few of them know to read and write. Each of them is unique and is handled and taught uniquely.
